et mes Soeurs en vos divers degrés et qualités ; The Executive Board of the Grand Orient of the United States of America and its membership are extremely thankful to the Grand Orient of France for the fraternity, kindness and friendship that you have extended to us over the past year as we have begun to exchange ideas and information between us. We especially want to thank Grand Master Jean-Michel Quillardet for his courage in support of the vision of a bridge of fraternity extending across the Atlantic Ocean from France to America, Grand Secretary of External Affairs Avelino Valle and Assistant Secretary of External Affairs Patrice Billaud for making the journey to Washington DC to meet with us, and Brother Jean Francois Mefort for his help and guidance along this difficult but promising path that we are walking. Le Conseil d'administration du Grand Orient des Etats-Unis d'Amérique et ses membres sont extrêmement reconnaissants au Grand Orient de France pour la fraternité, la gentillesse et l'amitié que vous nous avez manifestées tout au long de cette dernière année lorsque nous avons eu l'occasion d'échanger des idées et des informations entre nous. Nous voudrions remercier tout particulièrement le Grand Maître Jean-Michel Quillardet pour sa détermination à soutenir la vision d'un pont de fraternité, par-dessus l'océan atlantique, de la France vers l'Amérique ; remercier également le Grand Secrétaire aux Affaires Extérieures Avelino Vallé et le Grand Secrétaire aux Affaires Extérieures Adjoint Patrice Billaud qui se sont rendus à Washington DC pour nous rencontrer ; remercier enfin le Frère Jean-François Mefort pour son aide et ses conseils tout au long du difficile mais prometteur parcours que nous entreprenons. We have had an increasingly fruitful dialogue in the last months not only with you here in Paris, but also with your members who are living and working in the United States. In America, we have grown extremely close in many instances with members of the Grand Orient of France. Nous avons eu, de façon croissante, un fructueux dialogue au cours des derniers mois non seulement avec vous ici à Paris, mais également avec vos membres qui vivent et travaillent aux Etats-Unis. But now, with the signing today of the Patent we will be able to work even more closely together in both France and in America for our mutual benefit and for the benefit of all Freemasonry. We believe that there is a resonance between our two respective organizations. Our understanding and practice of the traditions of liberal Freemasonry at the Grand Orient of the United States of America are quite similar to that practiced by you here in the Grand Orient of France. We each believe in the study of initiation, tradition and renewal. We each believe in liberty, equality and fraternity and the absolute freedom of conscience in pursuit of virtue and truth. We also believe that we each have responsibilities to fulfill to each other, to our neighbor, our respective nations, and that we have responsibilities to be of service to the planet and to humanity. Traditional liberal Freemasonry has not been a complete stranger to America over the last 100 years, nor was it entirely a stranger in the 18th and 19th centuries. And in the history of Freemasonry there have been very significant moments of exchange in Freemasonry between France and the United States. I need only mention the arrival of Lafayette to fight alongside Washington in the American Revolution, the reception of Benjamin Franklin by fellow Freemasons in Paris in the same time period, or the fact of the involvement of French Freemasons of the Grand Orient of France in the conceptualization and building of the American Statue of Liberty. La franc-maçonnerie libérale traditionnelle n'a pas été totalement absente de l'Amérique au cours de ces cent dernières années, voire même au XVIIIème et XIXème siècles. Et dans l'histoire de la Franc-Maçonnerie, il y a eu des moments d'échange maçonniques très marquants entre la France et les Etats-Unis. Il n'est besoin que de mentionner l'arrivée de Lafayette qui a combattu aux côtés de Washington lors de la Révolution américaine, la réception de Benjamin Franklin par des Franc-Maçons à Paris à la même époque ou encore l'implication des Franc-Maçons du Grand Orient de France dans la conceptualisation et la construction de la Statue de la Liberté. But today here in this Masonic Temple, and from this point forward in our respective lodges, there will be another exchange of the ideals and spirit of Freemasonry. There is much hard work to do, but as Masons, we love and honor work. It is what we like to do, as much as we like to find moments of refreshment and relaxation. Mais aujourd'hui, dans ce Temple maçonnique et à partir de ce moment, dans nos loges respectives, il y aura d'autres échanges sur les idéaux et l'esprit de la Franc-Maçonnerie. We have had mixed Freemasonry in North America, and all women Freemasonry in America and Canada. But today the Grand Orient of France has, in my opinion, provided the "missing piece"-the "missing link in the chain of union"-to North American Freemasonry. We have not had a masculine obedience of liberal Freemasonry in America for a very long time. But because of what we are doing in this Masonic Temple this afternoon, American Freemasons are now presented with the opportunity to build the type of Freemasonry we see practiced in continental Europe, and in France. With the hard work of each Mason in the Grand Orient of the United States change is possible. America is a large country, and part of a very large continent, but perhaps American Freemasonry will once again prosper in this new day. We will need to prosper in America if we are ever to be able to return the gift you have given us. It is a remarkable gift that you have given American Freemasonry. Nous n'avions pas eu d'obédience maçonnique libérale masculine en Amérique depuis très longtemps. Mais en raison de ce que nous sommes en train de faire dans ce Temple maçonnique à ce moment précis, les Franc-Maçons américains ont désormais l'opportunité de construire un type de Franc-Maçonnerie que nous voyons pratiquer en Europe continentale, et en France en particulier. Le changement est possible grâce au travail de chaque Frère au sein du Grand Orient des Etats-Unis d'Amérique. L'Amérique est un grand pays qui appartient à un très large continent. Mais peut-être la Franc-Maçonnerie américaine prospèrera-t-elle de nouveau à compter de ce jour. I invite each of you, and all members of the Grand Orient of France, and all liberal Freemasons, to visit us in America. I especially invite you to work with us on a major scholarly project that is being discussed at this time among academics and Freemasons in America. I am referring to a research project that has been proposed among scholars and Freemasons working with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA; the University of Sheffield, England; and Michel de Montaigne, Bordeaux III, France, and others. The research project is going to examine the history of French and Anglo-American exchange in Freemasonry for three centuries. This work can build upon a research agenda started in 2006 by Freemasons and scholars working with the European Science Foundation, but now American Brothers, and Sisters, shall be involved. This is one of the numerous ways we can work together. J'invite chacun d'entre vous, ainsi que tous les membres du Grand Orient de France et tous les Franc-Maçons de la Franc-Maçonnerie libérale, à nous rendre visite en Amérique. Je vous invite en particulier à travailler avec nous à un projet éducatif très important qui est en cours de discussion en ce moment parmi les universités et les Franc-Maçons en Amérique. Il s'agit d'un projet de recherche qui a été proposé par des universitaires et des Franc-Maçons travaillant à l'Université de Californie à Los Angeles (UCLA), à l'Université de Sheffield en Angleterre, à l'Université Michel de Montaigne - Bordeaux III en France et d'autres encore. Ce projet de recherche va se concentrer sur l'étude historique des relations entre la Franc-Maçonnerie anglo-saxonne et la Franc-Maçonnerie française pendant trois siècles. C'est l'une des nombreuses manières de travailler ensemble. We cannot be certain of what the future holds, but we shall meet each other again-as American and French Freemasons.
